Lifting up Jesus at Roane Community Church!

The words of Jesus are recorded in the Gospel of John 12:32 "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." No Biblical commentary is adequate enough to explain what Jesus meant concerning theses words.

Here is an inadequate attempt to give meaning. First of all I believe Jesus was referring to the Old Testament experience of how God directed Moses to lead the children of Israel out of Egyptian slavery to their own land and to freedom. In Exodus chapter 16 God gave the manna for bread, and in Exodus He instructed Moses to strike the rock in Horeb to provide for water. Later the people complained against Moses and God against those provisions. In Numbers chapter Num 21:5-9 God sent fiery serpents to bite the people and many died. They went to Moses and admitted that they sinned against God and so Moses prayed. God told him to make a brass serpent and put it on a pole. All of those who had been bitten as they looked to the serpent would be healed and would live. This was to also represent the Son of God and Messiah when He would come to save all those who would look to God and trust Him.
Jesus referred to this and stated that if the Son of man be lifted up that whosoever believes in Him would have eternal life. Also as he was talking to Nicodemus in John chapter 3, he was no doubt referring to the time when He would give up His life so that all men would be free from the slavery of sin and have eternal life - John 3:14-16. Not only did Jesus say that He was the Bread of Life and that He was the Water of Life but that He was also "the Way , the Truth, and the Life" -John 14:6.

In John 8:28 "Then Said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am He, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father taught me, I speak these things." Later Jesus said "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." -John 8:36. Jesus gave His life as a ransom for our sins to make us free from the condemnation and slavery of sin. The Apostle Paul said that God "has made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him" -1 Corinthians 5:21. Paul continues "But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" - Romans 6:22-23.

The conclusion is this: When we lift Jesus up He will draw all men to everlasting life. The purpose of the Church then is to lift Jesus up.

Every thing we do in the Church and outside of the church as representatives of Jesus should honor and glorify Him. This is because only the truth about Him has any meaning worth living for in this life. Every sermon, worship service, prayer meeting, Bible study, board meeting, business meeting, fellowship dinner, church visitation program, children’s ministries, deacons activities, funerals, weddings and any other activity that the church does should leave an imprint of Jesus on the mind and heart.

We at Roane Community Seventh Day Adventist Church are dedicated to "Lifting Jesus up" in our lives and in all that we say or do. After all, Jesus is The Creator who came to this earth to be our Savior and is now our High Priest interceding in our behalf in Heaven and is coming again as a Conquering King soon in the clouds of the sky to receive the redeemed of earth and take us where He is - John 14:1-3.

Please come and join us and grow with us worshipping and serving God together as we lift Jesus up to His throne in our hearts and lives.
